Review: Inferno

Inferno
Inferno by Dante Alighieri

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting translation that tries to update the 13th century language and explain all the many characters in understandable terms while making the story fun to read. With a couple of clanking misses on the slang updates, the author (Mary Jo Bang) succeeds in keeping the story moving along at a rollicking pace. It would be interesting to recast all the Tuscan gossip with people from the pages of People and Us magazines, but of course that isn't possible. Still, she does a fine job of explaining who everyone was.

I could've lived without the illustrations. They were a little too "primitive arty" for me.
