Miss Zukas and the Library Murders, by Jo Dereske

Had to read this, since Miss Z is a librarian. It wasn't worth going any further, though...

Betrayal of Trust, by J.A. Jance

Beaumont and his wife Mel are asked to investigate the Washington State governor's step-grandson's activities when the governor finds an apparent snuff video on the kid's cell phone.

From that, the case explodes into the death of the boy, the death of the girl in the video, the intermixture of the rich and poor at a teenage sort-of-halfway-house, and politics. Not a strong plot, but the characters are so well-drawn that it feels like more than it is. And I do like Beau, even as he gets old and creaky and his knees get more and more painful. Oh, and he gets to meet his father's side of the family finally, too.

Running Scared, by Lisa Jackson (on CD ... and paper)

I bailed on this CD near the end simply because I couldn't stand listening to it anymore. But I had to find out how the plot tied up. A little too neatly for my liking. Reminded me why I don't read romantic suspense novels very often. Ugh.

Gym Candy, by Carl Deuker

High school football + steroids = YA problem novel.

Good book, though--Deuker really gets to the heart and brains of athletes. And it's not at all conclusive at the end; what does Mick do after he leaves rehab?

Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer (on CD)

So, I heard the author on NPR a few weeks ago talking about her new (adult) novel. They mentioned the series begun by this book and since it's been on reserve perpetually forever, I figured I'd give it a try.

It's not bad. OK, it's actually very good--although I was not in love with the person reading it--in fact, it's quite subversive for a YA novel. All about self-control and doing the right thing out of love in spite of a lot of reasons not to do the right thing; sometimes the right thing is against one's very nature. Interesting.

As a love story...meh, I'm not thrilled with it, however.

Did I mention the vampires? Oh. There are vampires.
