Review: The Cuckoo's Calling
The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I read this in just over 12 hours, checked out immediately after the news that it's a Rowling book hit the news. It's quite good, and like her more well-known books, it moves right along in plot and characterization. The people are well-drawn and interesting enough that they are easily tracked, and for a change not everyone is gorgeous and wonderful. Except of course for the models and Famous People.
Essentially, the plot revolves around the death of a model who fell--or was pushed?--off her 4th floor balcony. Her brother hires a very down-on-his-luck PI to figure out who killed her. This detective has all sorts of issues, but somehow manages to keep focus on the case, his only case.
Good. Very good. I wonder if she's planning to serialize this, or if this is a one-off. There are enough solid characters here to make a good series, but in a way I'm hoping she doesn't do the usual thing going forward.

I listened to this last week and lost track of time one night--staying up until 3 am! I also gave it 5 of 5. Even if it wasn't a Rowling, I loved it.
