A Cold Day in Paradise, by Steve Hamilton

Pretty interesting character here: Alex McKnight, former Detroit cop now Yooper P.I. who gets mixed up in the murder of a bookmaker...and then another...which ties back to a man who shot his partner in Detroit and tried to kill him.

The bitter frigidity of the U.S./Canadian border area is fully captured here, as are the characterizations. I sorta knew something shady was going on, but couldn't figure it out (wow!), and it leaves some tantalizing questions on the table at the end. Good book.
