I read all of these (except the latest) out loud to Sparky, and because of that I know how difficult it is to keep straight everyone who appears. There are a lot of characters. I'd heard good reviews of Jim Dale's performance and had wanted to check in on it.

It is an outstanding performance. He does well at matching the voices with the characters. Having read the book and seen the movie, what I find really interesting is that the story is less compelling than in either of the other formats. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to listening to books being read, or perhaps it's that I knew the story already so I didn't have to listen for plot as closely...the story just didn't hold up well.

In any case, I'll be listening to the rest of these, because even with the quibble about the plotting, I do like the stories, and they have gotten better (I think) as the series has progressed.

Plus, I need something to do in the car instead of radio!
