If you like William Bennett, Robert Bork or Dr. Laura, I would suggest not bothering with this book. Savage decides to take the Founding Fathers up on the suggestion that we "pursue happiness" and see what kinds of sins we are committing to do so. Sins, that is, as defined by the Seven Deadlies (Greed, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Anger). He selects the worst example he can come up with in each category and then does his best to throw himself into that milieu. Sometimes it just doesn't work (the chapter on gluttony), and sometimes the poignancy is perfect (the guns chapter).
Funny. Very very funny. Stunningly points out the hypocrisy of the "virtuecrats" and their program for living perfectly while merrily pursuing a very un-virtuous life. People who don't like his 'lifestyle' (he's in a longterm relationship with a man) will write off this book, but it's worth a thought or two, if only because it's another example of how divided our country has become. Which, in turn, is very very sad.
