My Ratings: 9 Merit, 9 Interest, 10 Fun
What a fun book! This looks at the history of nursery rhymes from a completely practical point of view. The author got his idea for writing the book from doing walking tours, and it shows. There's not a lot of space given for sources and citations; the text just moves right along. A bibliography has been included, however, so if you want to do a little more reading, you have some suggestions of where to start.
The only--very minor--quibble I have with the book is that some of the rhymes are British and almost unheard of in America. That's a little frustrating. On the other hand, he is British, and he had to pick and choose. Why should he do a bunch of stuff he didn't know himself? And why not pick what you like best if you're writing a book?
I enjoyed the author's sense of humor and fun, and the fact that he readily admits that we really don't know exactly where all these rhymes came from of whether they have Deep Meaning. They are fun, and so is this book.
