My Ratings: 8 Merit, 8 Interest, 8 Fun
I started reading this last week while Sparky was doing homework and I had nothing much to do. I was immediately drawn into the story, which moves along at quite a clip. My favorite bit? The explanation of how to pronounce Welsh. Which is hardly the point of the book.
The point is that this is book three in the "Dark is Rising" series in which Will Stanton is helping to defend the Light to keep evil from overtaking the world. Will is an Old One, a sort-of wizard-with-benefits. He has been sent to Wales to recover from a bad bout of hepatitis, only to find himself thrown into the battle's center. We find dead sheep, evil shadow foxes, an albino boy with a mysterious past (and an even more mysterious future), and a magic harp.
Cooper has built an amazing universe of beyond-the-human-senses activities. Focussing the future of the world on a 13-year-old boy is perfect for kids to read about. Generally the plot is enough to keep an adult interested, although it seemed brought to a close far too quickly so that we can move on to book four. Maybe I'm just used to reading longer books. The characters in this book are wonderfully drawn, in simple words and descriptions. I actually wonder how long I can put off reading the last book (even though I haven't read the others!).
