In the first book (A Wrinkle in Time), Meg and Charles Wallace Murry rescue their father from another planet. In this book, Meg and her friend Calvin have to work with the abhorrent principle from Charles Wallace’s school to keep Charles’ mitochondria from failing. And, there be dragons. Well, actually, not, but that’s what Charles Wallace calls Proginoskes, their guardian.
This is a less bombastic, thrill-ride kind of a book. There are some deep truths here, ones that I think kids are certainly capable of understanding. The problem is that it’s a little too...uhm...slow-moving. And aside from the coolness factor of going inside a human body, we never really get to see much of the mitochondria itself, which is too bad since they’re all over the news regularly now.
Still, we are continuing on in the series. Next up: A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
