This is a very basic overview of the situation women have found themselves in over the centuries in relation to the church. Mostly it's not a pretty picture. While there was some shifting at various times, at any given time there were really very few options open to women. I was interested to find out about the change in how women were viewed prior to the 1800s (woman as Eve, i.e. the center of sin) as opposed to the evolution of their role in Victorian times (woman as the civilizer of the world). What a choice!
Every time I read something like this, I am struck not only by how far women have come, but by how quickly it could all slip away again.
