The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
It almost sounds like the intro to a joke: A Golem and a Jinni walk in to New York City.... But this book is not a joke; it's very good, and a really interesting look at turn-of-the-20th-century New York and how it related and relates to the rest of the world. A reflection on immigration, power, control, selfhood, and hard work. And oh yeah, some interesting fables and religious/ethnic mythology thrown in for spice.
Love it. Hope Wecker writes more.
