Review: In Paradise: A Novel
In Paradise: A Novel by Peter Matthiessen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Wow. Great book. Lots to dig through in this story of a descendant of a Polish baron returning to his family's hometown of Oświęcim in 1996 after his father and grandparents have died in the U.S. He was rescued as a baby in 1939. His family had already left Poland ahead of the Nazis routing the Polish Army, but not before his father impregnated a local girl.
The story is really about a mixed group of people who are attending a first-ever retreat at Auschwitz, the camp. And I can't say very much else except there are lots of different personalities and reasons for people to attend, and it's a bit fractious to say the least.
